Direct Support

Job Summary

The DSP provides support services to individuals with disabilities. This support may be offered in the home or in the community. Living Innovations manages many programs for individuals, such as Children’s Programs, School Programs, and adult Day Programs, all of which require compassionate staff members. DSP services include, but are not limited to; assisting individuals with developing social skills, locating and utilizing community resources and activities, assisting individuals with locating sites for volunteer opportunities, teaching daily living skills, and providing companionship.

Qualification

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.

  • Valid driver’s license with driving record in “good standing”

  • Good communication skills with the ability to speak to clients in their native language

  • Dependability and flexibility with scheduling

  • Absence of a “criminal record”

  • Successful completion of the required training program at Living Innovations or documented proof of successful completion of a similar training program.

  • Use of an automobile with adequate liability insurance ($100,000/$300,000)

  • Neat appearance, dependable, responsible, and good personal hygiene

Responsibilities

  • Assist individuals with locating and utilizing community resources and activities (clubs, classes, social events, etc.)

  • Act as a community resource to individual/family

  • Identifying client-specific training needs

  • Providing transportation for errands and activities

  • Scheduling and attending medical appointments

  • Assist individuals with active job search

  • Act as a role model for job skills and work ethic

  • Facilitate appropriate job match

  • Set up banking services and assist with budgeting and money

  • Facilitate appropriate environmental modifications that support individual’s learning style

  • Assist with meal planning, preparation, and nutritional information

  • Provide companionship

Organizational Relationship

The Direct Support Professional reports directly to the Community Living Coordinator.

Functional Abilities

  • Ability to stand and walk on a frequent basis

  • Ability to move and/or lift up to 50 pounds

  • Ability to assist in client transfers

  • Has reliable transportation

  • Able to read, write and speak in a manner understood by most persons
